Ads Inside Google AI Answers: What the New Placement Means for Brands

Google’s AI‑powered answer panels now show hundreds of thousands of ads, mainly for apparel and electronics. Learn how to position your campaigns for this surface.

Adthena’s Holiday AI Paid Search Report found roughly 175,100 paid ad placements inside Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode panels in the U.S. between June and September, with apparel accounting for about 111,000 placements and consumer electronics about 55,000. The same report counted 204,489 ChatGPT ad placements across the same five categories.

Google’s Help Page confirms that any active Search, Shopping, or Performance Max campaign is automatically eligible for those AI‑Answers slots. You can’t buy a dedicated inventory, but you can influence eligibility with negative keywords or brand exclusions.

Why the AI‑Answers surface matters

When a user asks a query that triggers an AI Overview or AI Mode response, Google may surface a concise answer plus a carousel of paid placements. Those placements appear right next to the AI‑generated answer, meaning the shopper is already in a high‑intent moment.

The report shows an 89 % jump in AI Overview impressions in the U.S. from August 2025 to August 2026, indicating rapid growth of the format.

What you can control today

  • Keep all Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns active – they are the only way to be eligible for AI‑Answers placements.
  • Add negative keywords that filter out irrelevant queries but preserve core product terms (e.g., “free”, “review”).
  • Use brand‑level exclusions if you don’t want your own brand to appear alongside competitors in the AI carousel.
  • Ensure your product feed is complete and up‑to‑date so Shopping ads can surface when the AI surface pulls product data.

Optimising for apparel and electronics

The report notes that apparel and electronics dominate the AI‑Answers ad inventory. The following tactics can improve relevance for those categories:

  • Structure campaigns by product category (e.g., men’s shirts, smartphones) to allow more granular bidding.
  • Use Performance Max’s asset groups to feed high‑quality images and headlines that match the visual style of AI answer panels.
  • Test audience signals (custom intent, in‑market) that align with purchase‑ready shoppers.

What to do now

Our read is that the AI‑Answers surface will become a regular SERP feature, and early adopters will gain a share of high‑intent traffic before the space saturates. The safest path is to audit existing Google Ads accounts, confirm that Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are active, and then layer in the control mechanisms above.

If you’re not already running Performance Max, set up a pilot with a modest daily budget focused on your top‑selling apparel or electronics SKUs. Track impression share in the standard Search terms report – AI‑Answers impressions are already mixed in there – and watch for any lift in click‑through rates.

Finally, consider a short‑term partnership with a Google Ads specialist to fine‑tune feed quality, negative keyword lists and asset group composition. That extra expertise can shave weeks off the learning curve and help you capture AI‑Answers demand from day one.
